The Sustainability Standard
Sustainability is an increasingly important global issue and pressure on resources is having a profound effect on our industry - from impacting on the way materials are sourced, to design, development and manufacture techniques, and the implementation and afterlife of display in-store.
At POPAI, we are committed to minimising the environmental legacy of P-O-P and are leading the industry to a position of effective self-regulation for improving sustainability.
What is the POPAI Sustainability Standard?
The POPAI Sustainability Standard (PSS) is an independent industry-wide benchmark and auditing programme created to assist retailers, brands and suppliers in their drive to improve the environmental management and sustainability of P-O-P display.
How it works
The Standard follows 5 key modules across two stages to full PSS accreditation: Design, Plant & Premises, Materials & Processes, Supply Chain and Logistics.
STAGE ONE: Working towards PSS - Available Immediately
Provides exclusive access to
the world’s first dedicated online P-O-P design calculator. An invaluable tool, it offers a unique measure of environmental performance for both existing and proposed P-O-P solutions. Simply input information on materials, processes, sourcing and delivery logistics, and up to 6 design concepts at any one time can be compared and rated according to their environment impact.
PSS: Stage One also requires the completion of POPAI’s online environmental audit tool
which follows the 5 key modules. A scoring system provides a percentage rating against each module and measurement against a typical sector benchmark.
Registration for Stage 1 costs £495 plus VAT for POPAI members.

STAGE TWO: Full PSS Accreditation – From December 2011 Onwards
Leading to full PSS accreditation, Stage Two requires an on-site audit to ensure commitment to compliance, in addition to the services provided with Stage One. Once accredited, an annual audit will ensure ongoing development and compliance.
Full PSS accreditation status also includes:
- Expert on-site audit including advice, guidance and setting of future KPI’s
- One page online summary of environmental credentials
- Use of PSS Kitemark for corporate credentials and for use on P-O-P materials
- Accreditation certificate
