POPAI Sustainability Standard

The POPAI Sustainability Standard (PSS) was launched to measure, monitor and standardise the approach towards maintaining and improving the environmental performance of P-O-P.
With a dedicated Sustainability Project Manager in place, we’re working closely with members to help them scope and understand the restrictions that the P-O-P industry is currently facing.
We are committed to minimising the environmental legacy of P-O-P and leading the industry to a position of effective self-regulation for improving sustainability.
Project Update
Sustainable Design Seminar
Last month, POPAI held its first bi-annual Sustainable Design Seminar.
The event, hosted in association with De Montfort University, provided crucial insights into the many different approaches that can be taken towards the sustainable design and development of P-O-P.
With over 60 attendees from design agencies, manufacturers, installers and brands the event was a huge success further demonstrating that sustainability remains high on everyone’s agenda.
In-Store Show 2011

The new look POPAI exhibition stand at the In-Store Show last month attracted almost 1,000 visitors, many of them brands and retailers keen to engage with traditional offerings such as the Awards Gallery and popular new features such as the Knowledge Centre and Sustainability Zone.
The Knowledge Centre offered presentations including 'Measuring the Effectiveness of P-O-P' and a 'Digital Signage Masterclass.'
Hosted by Sustainability Project Manager, Jennifer Wilson, the Sustainability Zone offered regular interactive Q&A sessions which looked at the applications and implications of the POPAI Sustainability Standard (PSS) as well as demonstrations of the online calculator, ConVert.
In addition POPAI and De Montfort University presented ‘P-O-P and sustainability: the past, present and future’ on the Green retail stage to provide education and guidance on the wider issues surrounding sustainability.
Recent Activity
POPAI, in collaboration with Pyramid Display, is still actively engaged in data collection activities for Version 2 of ConVert due to be launched at the end of the summer.
To facilitate this process, Pyramid Display recently played host to a number of suppliers and manufacturers of P-O-P to engage them on the issues surrounding sustainability.
The feedback was extremely positive with many attendees providing invaluable insight into their operations which affect their environmental and sustainable performance.

What Other People Are Doing
This section of Sustainability Monthly will be dedicated to notable sustainability initiatives that wider industries are pioneering or becoming involved in.
Last month we featured TED Talks, a not-for-profit organisation that offers and disseminates technology, entertainment and design ideas to a global audience.
This month, we look at inhabitat, a ‘design will save the world’ blog spot.
Inhabitat is devoted to the future of design, tracking innovations in technology, practices and materials that are pushing architecture and home design towards a smarter and more sustainable future.
The team at inhabitat provide editorials, information and insight into the design issues that industry’s such as energy, transport, fashion, modern art and architecture and interiors currently face.
For particular inspiration, look at sections of inhabitat that includes products, technology and art as work in these areas offers the greatest potential for sustainable design.

“HRG are actively involved with developing the POPAI Sustainability Standard. From an agency perspective the primary objective is to create awareness within our organisation and amongst our clients and supplier base.
Some clients already have an awareness of sustainability. Those that don't get sustainable solutions anyway!
We have integrated sustainability into our QMS processes and are developing measurable KPI’s to evaluate and improve our conceptual, development and production thinking. For us it is all about the mind-set.”

This week’s recommendation is ‘Supply Chain Management,’ a presentation by Bureau Veritas.
