Honey – M&S Food Hall, Cribbs Causeway by Quagga Design
From ‘farm to shelf’ for M&S Honey Display by Quagga Design
This presentation by Quagga Design detailed their partnership with Marks & Spencer to create a striking honey-themed display for the Cribbs Causeway store. The brief was to design an eye-catching, story-led installation that disrupted the shopper journey while telling a meaningful “farm to shelf” narrative. The design process began at source, visiting the beekeeper and observing bees in their natural environment to inform the overall creative direction. This inspired a rustic, authentic aesthetic rooted in natural textures and the geometry of the honeycomb.
Repurposed beehive boxes became a central design element, chosen for their sustainability and symbolic value. The display combined oak cladding, hexagonal shelving, honeycomb, and illuminated graphics to create an immersive and educational in-store experience. The display was designed to integrate into M&S’s existing store infrastructure using a standard gondola end and standard shelving. The design preserved stock density and incorporated brand-critical features ensuring visual and functional consistency.
A full prototype was developed for feedback, allowing refinement and collaboration with the M&S team to ensure the final product stayed true to the original vision.
Key Takeaways:
- Authenticity through storytelling: Inspired by direct engagement with the beekeeper and farm environment.
- Sustainability at the core: Use of repurposed materials and FSC-certified components.
- Visual disruption: A bold, tactile design that stands out in-store and encourages shopper interaction.
- Seamless integration: Maintains M&S merchandising standards and enhances brand identity.
- Emotional connection: Creates a meaningful and memorable customer experience.
The result is a visually rich and ethically grounded display that transforms a simple fixture into a powerful point-of-purchase moment.
