POPAI Sustainability: Progress, Challenges and What's Next
In this opening session, Martin Kingdon, Chairman and Sustainability Director at POPAI, reflects on the progress made across the retail display industry since IMPACT25 and explores the key sustainability challenges still facing the sector.
The presentation examines the differing pace of sustainability adoption across the industry, the ongoing misconceptions surrounding materials, and the growing focus on waste reduction and circularity. It also provides an update on POPAI's expanding sustainability support services, including training programmes, materials pricing research, and new developments designed to help businesses improve their environmental performance.
A key focus of the session is the continued evolution of Sustain®, POPAI's global environmental measurement tool. Now used across 37,898 projects and covering more than 99.7 million finished displays, Sustain® continues to support brands, retailers, and suppliers in measuring and reducing environmental impact. The presentation highlights new developments including an AI-powered benchmarking dashboard, enhanced data quality checks, integration with third-party software through APIs, and the ongoing expansion of material datasets to provide even greater insight and accuracy.
Looking ahead, the session explores how data, technology, and industry collaboration are helping businesses make more informed sustainability decisions while driving continuous improvement across the retail display sector.
