This presentation explores how the Natural Collection relaunch for Boots was designed to deliver stronger in-store impact by aligning consumer values with sustainable retail design. While demand for conscious beauty is growing, the brand recognised a key barrier: shoppers want products that are better for the planet, but not at the expense of quality, accessibility or price.
The journey began with a clear understanding of the consumer. Insight revealed a desire for natural-looking, high-quality makeup from brands that make a positive environmental impact, alongside frustration that sustainable options often feel premium-priced. This shaped a clear target: environmentally conscious men and women aged 30–40+, seeking everyday makeup essentials that are inclusive and affordable. With these needs defined, the focus shifted to smart, sustainable design at the shelf. Working with Array, the relaunch applied Array’s 8 EcoDesign principles across materials, manufacturing and logistics. Lean construction, recyclable and renewable materials, reduced lighting and modular reuse ensured sustainability was built into the unit - not added on.
The result demonstrates the power of small, considered design changes. The new unit delivered significant reductions in plastic and CO2e, while also driving a 31% uplift during the trial period - proving that consumer-led sustainable design can deliver both environmental and commercial value.Key TakeawaysSustainability must be rooted in genuine consumer insight.
Smart design choices at shelf can drive both impact and performance. Small, scalable changes can deliver disproportionate environmental gains.Conscious beauty works best when it remains simple, inclusive and affordable.
