Sustainability in Partnership: How Supplier Collaboration Fuels Impact
This presentation details how collaboration between McGowans and Lidl Ireland helped deliver Ireland’s first Net Zero Energy Store.
Lidl's Net Zero Energy store in Ireland is grid-independent, powered entirely by a 575kW solar system and battery storage. Circularity is key, utilising 50% recycled concrete, clay blocks, and reused materials. The design integrates rainwater harvesting and promotes biodiversity via pollinator-friendly landscaping. This project successfully unifies energy efficiency, circular construction, and environmental giveback into one system.McGowans' role was to ensure the in-store print and display materials matched Lidl Ireland's low-carbon construction standards. They achieved significant carbon reductions by replacing common, carbon-intensive substrates like PVC and Foamex boards with sustainable alternatives such as cardboard and Priplak.
Key Takeaways:
• Verified credentials enable stronger retailer-supplier partnerships.
• Material innovation dramatically reduces embodied carbon.
• Carbon transparency supports measurable climate progress.
• Collaboration is essential for scalable, long-term sustainability impact.
The presentation was given by Channelle Ross, Sustainability Manger at McGowans Digital Print at the Dublin Sustainability Seminar on the 19 November 2025.
